What is

Independent Living & Community Engagement

It’s your right to define what being independent means for you, including where and how you want to live! This is going to require some help from your transition team to explore options, make a plan and learn new skills along the way.

Your transition team can help you figure out what works best for you when managing your health, setting up where and how you want to live, learning how to get to the places and managing your life, like your money and schedule.Your transition team should always teach you these skills in the places where you’ll actually be using them, like at work, home, school, stores and beyond!

Things to Consider

  • What kind of responsibilities do you have right now where you live?
  • How do you take care of yourself so that you’re physically and mentally healthy?
  • Which transportation options are you really comfortable with using by yourself to get to places that you want to go to? Which new ones do you want to learn how to use?
  • Do you know how to manage your money and schedule? What new things could you learn to do this even better?
